This book is neither biographical, nor a detailed history or complicated, scholarly study. Instead it is my attempt to tell the story of African-American businesses that existed or are in existence currently. Put into persepective, the social conflicts and forces set in motion so many years ago, in the city of Springfield and their impact on attitudes toward the growth of African-American entrepreneurship.
Hence my attempt to shed light on a very unique and valuable group of individuals, who I believe have been overlooked for so long. By bringing these individuals and their services to the forefront, I hope to show why it is worthwhile knowledge for the community of Springfield, Illinois and for those who have an interes in the Springfield, Illinois Black History.
The African-American businesses are important social instruments, and have formidable economic presence and are responders to the public demands and requests.
Entrepreneurship of the Springfield African-Americans, reflects the growing pride and determination to survive and succeed. This book reflects the growing need for the city to recognize the worth of economic renovation of businesses and providing loans for economic growth.
This book will also reflect the history of Springfield's own talented musicians, artists, the hotels, lounges and social organizations.
